There are moments in history that deserve more than a celebration—they deserve our reflection.

This Fourth of July is one of those moments.

As we gather with family and friends beneath a sky illuminated by fireworks, we do so during a truly historic year. We celebrate not only our nation's independence, but 250 years of the United States of America—a milestone few nations in history have reached with the same enduring commitment to liberty, self-government, and the pursuit of a better future.

For two and a half centuries, generations of Americans have built, defended, challenged, strengthened, and preserved this nation. Through times of extraordinary triumph and unimaginable hardship, the ideals upon which America was founded have continued to inspire millions across the world.

This Independence Day, we celebrate more than our past. We celebrate the enduring spirit that continues to shape our future.

The freedoms we enjoy today did not appear overnight.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, ordinary men and women made extraordinary sacrifices. They believed that every individual possessed God-given rights that no government could rightfully take away.
